This week, our profile looks at the two Democrats entered in the Clayton County Board of Supervisors’ race. There are six candidates for the single seat being vacated by Larry Gibbs, who is not running for re-election. Two more candidates are profiled here; the remaining two will be featured in our June 1 edition.

Dorothy “Jeanne” Africa

Dorothy “Jeanne” (Aylsworth) Africa, 54, of Clermont, Iowa went to be with our Lord and Savior on Monday, May 9, 2016. She died at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota, from complications related to open heart surgery. She was born July 3, 1961 to Gene and Janet (Dewald) Aylsworth in West Union, Iowa. Jeanne was baptized at the Wadena Presbyterian Church and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Arlington.

Allen Edwards

Allen Jay Edwards, Blue Eye, MO son of Alva J. and Imogene F. (Martin) Edwards, was born March 6, 1947 in St. Joseph, MO and departed this life on May 9, 2016 at the age of 69.

Allen had been a resident of the area for 13 years moving here from Elkader, IA.  He was a mechanic, servicing golf carts, a member of V.F.W. Post 2203 Shell Knob, MO and Masonic Lodge #712 Collinsville, IL.  He served his country in the United States Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Allen Edwards

Allen Jay Edwards, Blue Eye, MO son of Alva J. and Imogene F.(Martin) Edwards, was born March 6, 1947 in St. Joseph, MO and departed this life on May 9, 2016 at the age of 69. Allen had been a resident of the area for thirteen years moving here from Elkader, IA.  He was a mechanic, servicing golf carts, a member of V.F.W. Post 2203 Shell Knob, MO and Masonic Lodge #712 Collinsville, IL.  He served his country in the United States Army. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include: his wife, Elaine of the home; two daughters, Kimberly Bail and husband, Mitch of Sedalia, MO and Teresa Tuecke and husband, Jim of Oelwein, IA; two sons, Dan Phelps and wife, Anna of Fennimore, WI and Darrell Phelps of Mason City, IA; six grandchildren and a host of other family and friends. Visitation will be Saturday, May 14, 2016 10:00 a.m.-12:00 a.m. at Stumpff Funeral Chapel Kimberling City, MO.  Military Service will follow at 11:30 a.m.

Display at Carter House - Students share Civil War project

Central students will take a short road trip this week in order to share their work in a special setting. The students, all sophomores, will set up display boards Thursday at the Carter House Museum that will feature their research on the Civil War. The Carter House, built by pioneer brothers Ernest and Henry Carter, was completed about a decade before war broke out.

Virgil Martin

Virgil Clyde Martin, 94, of Anamosa, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 27, 2016, at Jones Regional Medical Center following a sudden illness. A Celebration of Life service with full military honors by the United States Army and the Anamosa Veterans was held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 2, 2016, at the United Methodist Church in Anamosa with Pastor Marty Schuhmacher officiating. Visitation was Sunday, May 1, at the Goettsch Funeral Home in Anamosa where family will received friends from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Burial was at 2:30 p.m. Monday, May 2, 2016, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center, Iowa.
