Helen Seeland

Helen Seeland, 95,  of rural Elkader passed away on February 28, 2017.  Helen was born on June 23, 1921, to Charles and Anna (Oehrle)  Nichols in Elkader where she attended and graduated from the public schools.  On May 31, 1940, she married Harold Seeland at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.  While raising five children, she was actively involved with the work on the family farm. Cooking and baking for her family and others were life-long pleasures for her.  Often her cooking and baking used fruits and vegetables from the big garden she enjoyed cultivating.

Richard Corlett, 66, of Farmersburg, Iowa died Saturday, February 25, 2017 at the Great River Care Center, McGregor, Iowa. Richard Hale was born August 15, 1950 to Hale and Marjorie (Knudson) Corlett Jr. in Elkader, Iowa. Rick graduated from MFL High School in 1969.

Helen Martha Storbeck, 88, of Elkader, died Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center. She was born in Farmersburg on April 16, 1928, to George and Ernestine (Horns) Hetz. Helen completed the 8th grade in country school. She was confirmed on March 29, 1942, at the Lutheran Church in Clayton, Iowa. On April 17, 1948, she was united in marriage to Raymond C. Storbeck at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Garnavillo, IA, by Pastor K. Landgrebe.

Erma Elizabeth Kainz, 83, of Volga, Iowa, died Thursday, February 23, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center in Elkader, Iowa. Erma was born on September 9, 1933, to Rudy and Dorothy (Orr) Kainz in Elkader, Iowa.She graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1950 and then attended Mankato State College in Mankato, Minnesota.

Richard Lowell Hildebrand, 86, of Edgewood, Iowa, died on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home. He was born on October 26, 1930, in rural Edgewood, the son of Vallie and Ethel (Hochhaus) Hildebrand. He was raised and educated in the area, graduating from Littleport High School in 1948.

Educators are giving Iowa’s elected officials a failing grade for passing a bill that drastically limits the collective bargaining power of public sector employees like teachers.

Ellen Ida Bente, 94, of Elkader, died Thursday, February 16, 1917, at the Good Samaritan Society in Waukon, Iowa. She was born in Elkader on April 8, 1922, to John and Alma (Mueller) Leuchtenmacher. She was baptized on July 22, 1922.
