Marion “Swede” Hjelmeng

Marion “Swede” Dale Hjelmeng, 90, of Elkader, passed away Friday, June 30, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center. Swede was born June 10, 1927, in West Union, to Sverre and Elva (Oleson) Hjelmeng. He attended school in West Union and Elkader and, after a year in the United States Navy, he went to Elkader Junior College for one year. On November 6, 1948, he was married to Lois Larson at Norway Lutheran Church.

Swede was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 37 years. He then worked for AT&T for one year, retiring in 1984. Following his retirement, he was self-employed with his own telephone service company until April 1, 2003.

Doll restoration Resident brings business to Elkader


Doll restorer Cathryn Chancellor is pictured with one of her favorites, a sassy Gibson Girl-style doll.

These two projects are at various stages of restoration. Cathryn, who recently relocated to Elkader, works on everything from antiques to American Girl Dolls.

There are several restoration projects underway at the stately Victorian house at 102 High Street, Elkader. There’s work on the house itself to return it to its 1913 splendor and then there’s work on the dozens of dolls entrusted to the care one of the property’s new owners, Cathryn Chancellor.

HOSPITALS AT RISK?

The closely held Republican healthcare plan, released last week, could have a devastating impact on the future of rural hospitals like Central Community Hospital in Elkader and Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, Guttenberg. That’s because the plan proposed deep cuts to Medicaid, which threatens the ability of smaller hospitals to provide care to rural residents.

LaVern Kuehl

LaVern Joseph “Mac” Kuehl, 95, Elkport, Iowa died Thursday, June 22, 2017, at the Regional Medical Center, Manchester, Iowa. Mac was born on October 7, 1921, rural Elkport, Iowa to John and Clara (Horstman) Kuehl Sr. He graduated from Elkport High School with the class of 1938.

Mac was united in marriage to Cora Mae Stocks on December 20, 1944, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Elkport, Iowa. Two children were born to this union. Mac farmed for many years until his retirement at which time he did carpentry work.

Blueberry Hill - Sibling rivalry leads to business venture


Keith Ashline, Littleport, stands amidst more than 700 blueberry bushes he’s planted since 2012. Each bush yields about five pounds of fruit.

Ashline’s blueberries are still green and hard but lush, ripened fruit will be available for picking in early July. Ashline is one of the state’s few blueberry farmers.

Harvey Lee Fredrick Borcherding

Harvey Lee Fredrick Borcherding, age 78, of Garnavillo, IA, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 13, 2017.  He was born on November 25, 1938 on the family farm in rural Guttenberg, the son of Delbert and Viola (Kregel) Borcherding.

Lois Jean Schulte

Lois Jean (Kilpatrick) Schulte, 87, of Edgewood, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood.  She was born on September 2, 1929, in Belmont, Wisconsin, the daughter of Frank and Selma (Riechers) Kilpatrick.  Lois was raised and educated in Belmont, played the French Horn, was a drum majorette, acted in stage productions, and graduated from Belmont High School in 1947.  Having gained experience in a part time high school job with the Belmont Success Newspaper, after graduation, Lois moved to Manchester to work at the Manchester Press as a linotype operator, earning $29 per week.
