Betty Lou McGee

Betty Lou (Witte) McGee, age 95, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by those who loved her on Saturday, July 8, 2017. She was born on November 25, 1921, in Elkader, Iowa, to parents Harvey and Florence (Tieden) Witte and grew up on the family’s dairy farm. She graduated from cosmetology school and throughout her life loved her clients and pursuing her work. 

Betty was an avid gardener, a hobby she enjoyed with her late husband, Jack. Her flower garden was always blooming with colorful flowers, which were admired by many people. Betty loved playing bridge with her friends and husband, and playing golf at Atlas Valley Country Club. She was also a talented painter and watercolorist.

Ron Hubbard, 60, of Winterset died unexpectedly Friday, June 30, 2017, at his home. 

A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, July 27, at Ochiltree Funeral Service, Winterset, with the family present to receive friends during this time. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m., Friday, July 28, at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation and online condolences may be made to the family at www.ochiltree.com.

Richard Smith

Dr. Richard A. Smith, 79, of Sumner, died on Friday, July 7, 2017, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, July 23, 2017, at the American Legion Hall in Sumner with Michael Schemmel officiating. Family inurnment will be held at Lima Cemetery, rural Wadena, with military rites by Thomas E. Woods Post #223, American Legion of Sumner. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 22nd at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the Legion Hall on Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to the Cedar Valley Hospice.

Harold Frick

Harold Albert Frick, 96, of Elkader, died peacefully at his sons’ home, Monday, July 3, 2017, in Manchester, Iowa. He was born August 27, 1920 in Plain, WI to Alfred and Rose (Nachreiner) Frick.

Harold was united in marriage to Letha Marie McManus on May 18, 1946, in Pontiac, MI. The couple was married for 62 years and blessed with four children. They spent their winters in Winter Haven, FL. for over 25 years.

Walter Whittle

Walter Whittle, age 89, passed over to the father on Monday, July 10, 2017, at Madonna Towers in Rochester, MN. He lived at Shorewood Senior Living in Rochester for the past eight years where he enjoyed many new friends. He was the eldest child of nine children born to Margaret (Holtz) and Ambrose Whittle. He was born near Littleport, Iowa, on May 26, 1928, where he lived with his family on a number of farms in the area. He attended country school and St. Joseph’s high school. He enjoyed working on the farm helping his Dad and brothers.

FATHER PETERS ENDS CHURCH CAREER

Editor’s note: Father Paul Peters celebrated his final mass on June 25, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Elkader, capping off a career that covered nearly six decades. Lori Keppler shared his story.

Father Paul Peters was born October 18, 1936, in Fairbank, Iowa to Leo and Vera (Preble) Peters. If you have been to Elkader for St. Patrick’s Day in recent years you may have been able to enjoy his musical talent during the annual celebration. That is just one event that he has blessed us with his musical flair.
