Jacqueline Moon

Jacqueline Jane Moon, age 87, of Omaha, NE and formerly of Elkader, Iowa and Harlan, Iowa passed away in August 6, 2017.

Jackie was born in Guttenberg, IA on December 18, 1929, to Merrill and Myrtle (Cassutt) Smith. She wed Ronald Moon on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1954, and lived in Elkader until 1974. Jackie and Ron moved to Harlan, IAwhere Jackie worked for the Kohorst Law Firm for approximately 20 years. In 2010, she moved to Omaha to be closer to family.

Charles Joseph Chase, 72, of Volga, Iowa died Wednesday, August 2, 2017, at Regional Medical Center in Manchester, Iowa. Charles was born August 3, 1944, to Lester and Dorothy (Hermen) Chase in Oelwein, Iowa. He graduated from Central High School and also graduated from Universal Trade School of Omaha, Nebraska.

Maxine Loraine Matthews, 91, of Elkader, Iowa, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, August 4, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, August 12, 2017, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.

Clayton County Courthouse - Clock restoration moves forward


Here’s a file photo of the clock before restoration work was done.

The face of the Clayton County Courthouse clock has been restored to its original state. The rest of the renovation work will be completed next summer.

If Elkader’s newest police officer looks a bit familiar, it’s because she’s a hometown girl. Kerra Kruse, who was sworn into office last week, is a 2014 Central High School graduate. Kruse has been attending the University of Northern Iowa majoring in criminology. At UNI, she got significant practical experience in law enforcement as a student patrol officer.

Paula Everitt

Paula Noel Everitt, 62, of Volga,Iowa died Thursday, July 27, 2017, at Palmer Hospital, West Union, Iowa. She was born September, 6, 1954, to Helmer and Ruby (McClane) Peterson. She attended Elkader schools and received her G.E.D in Calmar. Paula continued her education and received her Associates Degree in Medical Transcription.

Lego legacy - Final bricks added to 2-year project


Tim Finley and his children, Declan and Jillian, survey the scale-model Lego replica of Fennelly’s Irish Pub, the Elkader business co-owned by Finley and his wife, Trisha.

A rather serendipitous discovery was a Lego piece that bears a striking resemblance to Sweet Corn Days mascot. It occupies a place of honor in the Lego replica of the Finelys’ pub.
