A belated holiday present - Vietnamese students send greetings


Central student Haley Frieden puts the final touches on a holiday card she completed before the winter break. Local students sent cards to schools in Ohio, Spain and Vietnam.

When Central 7th graders returned to the classroom after the winter break, they found a belated Christmas greeting waiting from them. The students had received a stack of holiday cards from a group of Vietnamese students. The greetings were sent in response to cards the Central group sent to halfway around the world in mid-December.

Mary Jane  Francis (Meyer) Steger, age 89, of Elkport, IA, died peacefully Sunday, January 7, 2018, at the Central Community Hospital in Elkader surrounded by her family. She was born on November 7, 1928, in Dyersville IA, the daughter of Leo and Loretta (Weber) Meyer.

Edward Coobs

Edward William Coobs, 81, of Elkader, Iowa, died unexpectedly on December 17, 2017, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Ed was born in Elkader, Iowa, in 1936 and graduated from Central Community High School in 1955. He married Doris Rodenberg on January 26, 1957, and four children were born into their union: Earl (Liwen) Coobs (Billings, MT), Donna (Charles) Strange (North Liberty, IA), Eric (Lori) Coobs (Billings, MT), and Evan (Karen) Coobs (Champaign, IL). Ed and Doris divorced 13 years later.

Dale Sylvester

Dale G. Sylvester, 82, of rural Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away on January 4, 2018, at Colonial Manor, Amana, Iowa.

Dale was born October 27, 1935, in rural Guttenberg to Dale and Hazel Putzier Sylvester. He married Rose McDowell. They later divorced. Dale served in the United States Air Force as an MP from 1955-1958. He was employed full-time at Rockwell Collins for 38 ½ years. While working at Collins, Dale also had many part-time jobs including pumping gas at a Conoco Station in Marion, custodial work for Midwest Janitorial Services in Cedar Rapids, and owning his pride and joy, Sylvester Radio and TV Repair Shop in Marion, retiring in 1990.

John Kluth

John Verdine Kluth, 86, of Farmersburg, Iowa died Sunday, January 7, 2018 at Elkader Care Center, Elkader, Iowa. John was born on May 1, 1931, to John A. and Alice (Glawe) Kluth in rural Farmersburg Township. He was baptized on June 14, 1931, and confirmed on July 25, 1945, at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, Iowa. John attended Mecklenberg rural school and graduated from Farmersburg High School in 1948. He farmed with his folks after graduation. In 1953 John was drafted into the United States Army. He served thirteen months in France. John was honorably discharged in 1955.

Kyle Dettmann

 Kyle Russell Dettmann, age 45, went to join his family in heaven on Friday, December 29, 2017, from the Guttenberg Care Center.  

Kyle received his education from the Garnavillo School System and worked for many years constructing homes. Kyle loved four wheeling, stock car racing, motorcycles and spending time with family and friends.

James “Jim” Ormus Farmer, 90, of Gunder, Iowa died Saturday, December 23, 2017 at his home. James Ormus was born June 18, 1927 to Lee and Ruby (Trudo) Farmer in Clermont, Iowa. He attended Grand Meadow Country School near Clermont through the ninth grade and attended one year of high school in Postville.

Margaret R. Marfilius, 100, of Monona, Iowa died Friday, December 22, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society in Postville, Iowa. Margaret Ruth was born April 27, 1917 to George and Hulda (Miller) Hubacher in Mason City, Iowa. She attended Jackson and Roosevelt School through the eighth grade, graduated from the Mason City High School and attended two years at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
