SPECIAL COLLECTION RESULTS ARE IN

The results from a special deer collection authorized last month by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources are in and there’s good news for Clayton County: No signs of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) were found in the 90 samples submitted for testing. Allamakee County did not fare as well: One sample collected there tested positive for CWD; another sample is going through a second round of testing after coming back “suspected positive.”

Patricia Ritter

Patricia B. Ritter, 87, of Arlington, Iowa, died Tuesday morning, February 20, 2018, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner, Iowa.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Friday, February 23, 2018, at the United Methodist Church in Arlington with Pastor Dennis Gilbert officiating. There was a visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Arlington and r one hour before the service on Friday at the church. Interment was Taylorsville Cemetery, Arlington.

Memorials may be directed in her name to the Arlington United Methodist Church.

Burnell Wilker

Burnell Wilker, 86, of Elkader, passed away Thursday, February 15th, 2018, peacefully in hospice care at Central Community Hospital. Burnell Wilhelm Arno Wilker was born March 7, 1931, to Arthur and Hertha (Funk) Wilker. He was baptized April 19, 1931 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center. He went to Public Schools of Clayton County and received a diploma from it on May 15th, 1945, and later graduated from Farmersburg High School in 1949. While in high school, Burnell enjoyed sports and lettered in baseball and basketball. He was a private in the Honor Platoon 203 U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed in San Diego, California.

Adella Hoeger

Adella C. Hoeger died on February 23, 2018, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, Guttenberg, following a brief illness.

Wake service was held on Monday, February 26, 2018 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, February 27, at 11 a.m. Burial was in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Garnavillo.

Robert Fisher

Robert F. “Bob” Fisher, 95, of Edgewood, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. He was born on November 6, 1922, on the family farm, the son of Fred and Bess (Michael) Fisher. 

Bob graduated from Edgewood High School on May 22, 1940. He then worked for a couple years before enlisting in the United States Army. He honorably served his country during World War II, landing on Normandy Beach on D-Day Plus 3 and participating in the Battle of the Bulge.

Ruby Koehn

Ruby G. Koehn, 86, of Elkader, died Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. Ruby was born April 3, 1931, in Gunder, to Gottfried and Clara (Knudtson) Kurth. She graduated from Postville High School.

Ruby was united in marriage to Alvin A. Koehn on April 5, 1949. The couple became the parents of seven children. She worked as a waitress and cook at Patrick’s Tavern and Café in Elkader for 35 years. She was always cooking and caring for her family. She enjoyed making lefse, working her puzzle books, canning meat and vegetables, and watching wrestling. She was an avid member of TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly) where she enjoyed a bit of social times with good friends.

Margaret May

Margaret M. Buckwalter (VansCoy) May, 97, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, surrounded by her loved ones, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home in Strawberry Point, Iowa.  She was born on May 30, 1920, in Geneseo, Illinois, the daughter of Charles Edward and Emma (Kaiser) Buckwalter.  She was baptized on April 17, 1922, at the Congregational Church in Atkinson, Illinois, and confirmed on October 31, 1937, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Geneseo, Illinois.  Margaret was raised and educated in the Geneseo area.  The family moved to Springville, Iowa, in 1938.

Merrill Smith

Merrill Russell Smith, Jr, 92, of Mount Dora passed away on Thursday February 8, 2018. He was born on March 20, 1925 in Dubuque, Iowa. His parents were Merrill Rosslyn Smith Sr. and Myrtle Ann Cassutt. He was married to Elaine Marie Felker on December 27, 1948 in Elkader, Iowa. 

Merrill had two children Rhonda Marie Smith and Holly Jane (Smith) Philpott (Steve). He had three siblings Donna Jean (Smith) Rippy(Ted), Jacqueline Jane(Smith) Moon(Ronnie), and Richard Allen Smith(Barbara).
