Moser Pharmacy - Business owners announce retirement


Jay and Kay Moser have sold their pharmacy to a Manchester couple who own stores in Strawberry Point and Sumner.

For more than 100 years, there’s been a pharmacy at the corner of Main and Cedar Streets in downtown Elkader. And for nearly 30 years, Jay and Kay Moser have been its owners. But that’s about to change. The building will remain a pharmacy but it will soon be under new ownership and new pharmacists will be standing behind its familiar raised counter.

WAITLIST IN PLACE FOR MEALS

Budget uncertainties mean some senior citizens in Clayton County won’t get free meals delivered to their homes.

According to Greg Zars, Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging, a waitlist is in effect for the “meals on wheels” program until the agency learns how much of their current budget has to be returned to the state.

Ivanelle Fishel

Ivanelle Fishel 94, of Elkader, passed away peacefully March 5, 2018, at the Elkader Care Center. Ivanelle Dorothea Wilhelmina Fishel was born February 23, 1924, in Volga Township, the daughter of Ferdinand and Ella (Wilke) Meenan. She received her education to the eighth grade at the Communia Country School. She was a lifetime member of Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader.

Central Schools Students make impressive gains in reading


As they read sentences together, Avery Fette and Zoe Armstrong place red chips on any digraphs they encounter. A digraph is a combination of letters that represent a single sound like the “ph” in telephone.

Central second graders give a “thumbs up” when a pair of words rhymes and a “thumbs down” when the pair doesn’t rhyme.

Iowa made national headlines last week after securing the top spot on the “Best States” rankings released by U.S. News and World Report. The magazine called Iowa the “best in the nation when it comes to infrastructure, healthcare, opportunity and education.” Last year, Iowa placed sixth.

Robert Schuety

Robert Edward Schuety, 52, of rural St. Olaf, passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2018, at his residence.

He was born December 4, 1965, in Elkader, to Edward Kuehl and Ardis (Peterson) Schuety. He received his education at Central Community School in Elkader and graduated from an online college. He was working to get his master’s degree in business.

Grace Louise Erickson, 88, of Farmersburg, Iowa died Sunday, February 25, 2018 at the Elkader Care Center, Elkader, Iowa. Grace Louise was born December 31, 1929, near Rossville, Iowa, to Sankey George and Minnie (Haman) Van Gorder. She was educated at Jefferson No. 8 Country School in Allamakee County and Waukon Public School. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Methodist Church in Waukon, Iowa.
