In recent weeks, there have been numerous bald eagles on St. Feriole Island and at other locations in and around Prairie du Chien. This eagle was in a tree in Lawler Park. Many viewing opportunities are available. (Photo by Ted Pennekamp)

Normally a live event at various locations in Prairie du Chien, Bald Eagle Appreciation Days will be a virtual event this year on Feb. 27.

Virtual programming includes:

•A streaming video event on Feb. 27 with video interviews and information featuring local conservation and eagle experts.

•Updates on the best locations to spot bald eagles in the Prairie du Chien area.

•Hallie Rasmussen of the Upper Mississippi River Fish and Wildlife Refuge discussing bald eagles in the area.

•Amy Ries of the Raptor Research Project discussing the habits of bald eagles with Dan Moris.

•Area bald eagle photographers find joy in capturing images of eagles in action.

In addition, the website prairieduchien.org/baldeagles/ can be used in order to learn about the area’s bald eagle population, discover where the eagles are nesting and likely viewable, and engage with the virtual event.

Birding Conditions

Bald eagles have moved to open water areas because food and dead fish are available in those locations.

Also, more than 100 trumpeter swans have been seen at the mouth of Rush Creek north of Ferryville. Other waterfowl are being seen in open water north of Lock and Dam 9 and at the artesian well ponds in Lynxville and at the Villa Louis in Prairie du Chien.

People are encouraged to please come to the Prairie du Chien area to view bald eagles. The use of spotting scopes, binoculars and cameras with large lenses are good ways to view eagles from a distance so as not to disturb them in any way.

Birding and eagle watching is a great outdoor socially distanced activity. It is hoped that everyone can enjoy the virtual programming and also plan to visit Prairie du Chien to see the breathtaking bald eagles in person.
