The MFL MarMac boys basketball team went 1-1 last week, closing out its regular season schedule.

The week started out on a high note, as the Bulldogs scored a 60-43 upset over 17-3 North Fayette Valley on Feb. 8, in arguably their biggest win of the year. MFL MarMac was spurred on by a 21-12 first quarter. The team was up 37-20 at halftime, then 49-29 by the end of the third quarter. Although the TigerHawks went on a 14-11 run in the final period, the Bulldogs cruised to a 17-point victory.

MFL MarMac shot an astonishing 61.8 percent from the field, including a 10-19 clip from behind the arc. NFV, on the other hand, managed just 39.6 percent from the field and hit only two of 18 three-point attempts.

Cullen McShane put up 20 points and eight rebounds—both team highs—and added four assists and a steal. Gavin Meana earned 12 points, all of which came from behind the arc. His stat line also included two rebounds. Cayden Ball finished the game with 10 points and an assist, while Carver Blietz-Bentien tallied seven points, six rebounds and an assist. Wyatt Powell also had seven points, along with three rebounds, three steals and a team-leading six assists.

Unfortunately, the Bulldogs couldn’t sustain that momentum into their next game, losing a Feb. 11 match-up with Decorah 76-37. This time, it was MFL MarMac who fell victim to a hot start, trailing 25-4 after the first quarter, then 40-18 at the break. The third quarter didn’t get any better, as the Vikings pulled off a 25-10 run en route to a 39-point win.

Decorah made over 49 percent of its shots in the game, while the Bulldogs hit just 27.3 percent of theirs. They also cooled down from three-point range, draining only seven of 29 attempts. The Vikings blocked seven MFL MarMac shots.

Ball led the team with 10 points, and also had two rebounds, an assist and a steal. Kaden Stocker added nine points, a rebound and a steal off the bench, while McShane finished the game with six points, a rebound and an assist.

The loss dropped MFL MarMac’s regular season record to 7-14. The team was 7-9 in Upper Iowa Conference play.

The Bulldogs started postseason play at Ed-Co Monday night, Feb. 15.
