An Elkader home is a total loss following a fire late Friday afternoon.

Around 3 p.m. on Feb. 5, the Elkader Fire Department was called to 302 Cedar St. NW, where the residence of Zach and Jill Marmann was on fire.

The department received mutual aid from the Garnavillo and Volga fire departments, who provided additional manpower, a pumper and tankers.

The Elkader Police Department responded as well, as chief Mitch Seitz and officer Tyler Bazyn initially made sure all the occupants were safely out of the burning house, as well as adjacent homes. The Elkader Police Department, along with the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, also provided traffic control, blocking and rerouting traffic away from the structure fire.

According to Elkader Fire Chief Scott Marmann, “The fire was roughly under control and put out by 10 p.m., with the help of a excavator to remove the steel roof which contained the fire tremendously, [and] the fire was a total loss to the family.”

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.

Two firemen sustained minor injuries due to icy conditions.

In the aftermath, the community has rallied around the Marmann family, responding with an outpouring of support and donations.

MFL MarMac Activity Director Dave Corlett informed his Central counterpart, Aaron Reinhart, about a plan to donate the program sales from the Feb. 6 wrestling sectional meet at MFL MarMac to the Marmann family. Those in attendance responded with generosity. According to Reinhart, donations from the program sales reached $1,000.

“A huge thank you to MFL MarMac for their generosity, along with all of the contributions and support from Starmont, Wapsie Valley, Edgewood-Colesburg, Denver, Postville and Sumner-Fredericksburg,” Reinhart said.

Additionally, anyone who wishes to help the cause can drop donations off at TD’s Sports Bar and Grille, as well as CJ’s Convenience and Ole 5 Star Realty, all located in Elkader.

“We are seeking anything people are willing to donate, whether it’s clothes, food, gift cards or cash donations. It can be dropped off at TD’s between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and we will be sure to get it to the family,” said TD’s owner Chelsea Armstrong. “I also know CJ’s in town is accepting any donation, or Ole’s 5 Star Realty offices are accepting cash donations and they will match up to $1000. We want to help them in any way we possibly can.”
