It was a 1-1 week for the MFL MarMac boys basketball team, which snagged a win over Central before dropping a match-up with Clayton Ridge.

The Bulldogs played at Central Feb. 2, defeating the Warriors 54-45. They led throughout the game, including 17-15 after the first quarter and 25-21 at the break. The margin increased to 42-29 by the end of the third period. Although Central out-scored the Bulldogs 16-12 in the fourth quarter, it wasn’t enough to cut the deficit.

MFL MarMac did some damage from behind the arc, with a 30.4 percentage, while the Warriors managed just 16.7 percent. The Bulldogs were also bolstered by a 17-26 night from the free throw line. Central got to the line just 12 times, making seven attempts.

Cayden Ball had a team-high 12 points, in addition to four assists, two rebounds, a steal and a block. Carver Blietz-Bentien scored a double-double, with 11 points and 10 rebounds. He also had two assists and a steal. Wyatt Powell’s stat line included eight points, eight rebounds, two assists and a team-leading three steals.

The Bulldogs took on Clayton Ridge Feb. 6. The Eagles were up just 6-5 through the first quarter, but pushed their lead to 25-16 by halftime. Both teams had single-digit third quarters, before the Eagles went on a 17-10 run to win the game 51-33.

MFL MarMac shot 32.4 percent from the field, below the 40.7 percent from Clayton Ridge. The Bulldogs were also out-rebounded 38-27 and turned the ball over 13 times, while the Eagles only had eight turnovers.

Coming off the bench, Kaden Stocker was MFL MarMac’s leading scorer, with 11 points. He also had three rebounds. Cullen McShane returned from injury to add five points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal, while Blietz-Bentien’s stat line included four points and team highs with seven rebounds and three assists.

The loss dropped MFL MarMac’s overall record to 6-13 and conference mark to 6-9. The Bulldogs will wrap up their regular season this week, hosting NFV on Feb. 8, followed by Decorah on Feb. 11. Postseason action will kick off Feb. 15, when they travel to Ed-Co for a Class 1A Substate 3 first round game.
