Eunice Marie Walke, 103, of Guttenberg, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020, at Finley Hospital in Dubuque.

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg. 

She was born on March 1, 1917, on the family farm just outside of Garber, the daughter of Emil and Malinda (Freitag) Zittergruen. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elkport. She attended rural school in Volga Township and graduated from Elkport High School in May 1934.

Eunice married Kenneth Walke on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 1939, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Elkport. Their wedding dance was the last wedding dance held at the now Plagman Barn, rural Garber. To this union one son, Robert (Bob) was born Jan. 6, 1942. The family rented three separate farms in Clayton County until March 1, 1948, when they purchased their family farm in rural Guttenberg. Eunice worked together with her husband and son on their dairy, hog, and poultry farm. In 1966, Ken and Eunice purchased a home in Guttenberg. After moving to town, Eunice worked part-time as a cook for J & I Café and for Doug’s Catering Service. 

Eunice loved to cook and bake. The cookie tin in the freezer was always full of chocolate chip or sugar cookies. Every Sunday she prepared Sunday dinner for her family, and every Christmas was her famous chocolate log. 

Eunice belonged to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elkport where she taught Sunday school and was an active member of Ladies Aid. She joined St. John’s Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, in 1966 and was very active in WELCA. 

Eunice enjoyed to crochet, sew, knit, and quilt. She loved playing rummy, Euchre, and Sheephead. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. 

Surviving are daughter-in-law, Joan Walke of Guttenberg; granddaughters, Traci (Cory) Ryan of Dubuque, Desiree Walke of Onalaska, Wis., and Stephanie (Josh) Chappell of Marquette; great-granddaughters, Paige (Justin Carey) Grohn of Laporte City, Gracelyn Chappell; great-great-grandson, Jack Carey; many nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Robert, and brothers, Hiram and Maloy Zittergruen.
