Maurice J. Mayer, 92, of Prairie du Chien, went to be with our Lord on Monday, Dec. 21, 2020, at Prairie Maison in Prairie du Chien.

He was born Dec. 16, 1928, the son of Anton and Pearl (DuCharme) Mayer at the McGregor Hotel in McGregor, Iowa. The family moved many times before settling in the Prairie du Chien area. He served in the Army post-WWII in the U.S. occupation of Germany. He returned to the states, working for a short time in Washington D.C. for the FBI. He later settled in Prairie du Chien to help take care of his parents. He worked as a store manager for Frank’s Rexall Drug for a large part of his life and retired from the post office.

Maurice enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, and golfing. He loved to read, especially history and westerns. He was a member of the Knights of the Columbus where he served as Grand Knight. He belonged to the Holy Family Parish. He was a “vocal” member of the parish choir for many years. As an outreach of his faith, he loved to lead the rosary and encourage others to pray. Maurice also charmed those around him. He once made a bus trip to Green Bay for a Packer game and delighted the tour with his story of sneaking into Old City Stadium to watch the Packers play when he lived in Green Bay.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty; four sons Mark (Margie) of Jonesborough, Tenn., Duane (Bernadette) of Madison, Ala., Steven of La Crosse, Aaron (Ellen) of Plymouth, Minn.; his siblings, Bernard (Rosanna) Mayer of Prairie du Chien, and Judy (Tom) Krug of Racine; his five wonderful grandchildren Jennifer (Scott) Titkemeier of Tampa, Fla., Michael (Colleen) Mayer of Austin, Texas, Andrew Mayer of Jonesborough, Tenn., Elizabeth (David) McIntyre of Birmingham, Ala., and Catherine Mayer of Montgomery, Ala.; and four great-grandchildren, Philomena, Josef, Sara Beth, and Emily Elizabeth.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, John, Rev. Lawrence, Francis and Mildred.

A graveside service will be at a later date in the Calvary Cemetery in Prairie du Chien, Msgr. Charles Stoetzel officiating. The Garrity Funeral Home, of Prairie du Chien, is assisting the family.
