Don P. Buckman, 86, of the Garnavillo and Elkader areas, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2020, at the Guttenberg Care Center.

He was born April 11, 1934, to Arthur and Frances (Cords) Buckman on the family farm. He attended country school in Read Township until the third grade, when the family moved to town. Don graduated from Elkader High School with the class of 1952. Don entered the United States Army, serving in Germany from 1954 to 1955.

Don was united in marriage to Donna Robinson on June 23, 1956, at the United Methodist Church in Oelwein. Three sons were born to this union, Douglas, Darren and Dirk.

Farming was his life, and he especially loved the timber. Farming with his son Dirk was a special time in his life. Don loved to travel—he was able to return to Germany two times. He enjoyed visiting friends, relatives, class mates and Army buddies. He served on the Elkader Co-Op board for a number of years. Don attended Peace United Church of Christ, where he also served as a board member. Spending time with his granddaughters meant the world to him. We will not forget his love of sweets and…sometimes requiring a kiss on the cheek from the granddaughter requesting a piece of chocolate from his stash!

Survivors include his wife Donna, Elkader; sons, Darren (Gayla) Buckman, Plano, Texas, and Dirk (Melissa) Buckman, Garnavillo; five granddaughters, Heather (Vaughn) Tolbert, Stephanie (Jordan) Krenik, Maddison, Brenna and Ella; and two great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Owen Tolbert.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and son Douglas.

Public graveside service was on Dec. 9, at Garnavillo City Cemetery, with Rev. Jon Haack officiating.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home & Cremation Service is assisting the family. Online condolences may be left with www.graufuneralhomes.com.
