The MFL MarMac boys basketball team lost its Dec. 1 season opener at Turkey Valley 48-40.

The Trojans jumped out to a 10-5 early lead, then upped it to 22-16 at halftime. The Bulldogs just couldn’t catch them in the second half, falling by eight points.

The MFL MarMac offense struggled to get momentum in the game. Despite shooting the ball 10 more times, the Bulldogs hit the same amount of shots as Turkey Valley—15. The team was also just 5-31 behind the arc and got to the free throw line only nine times, compared to 28 attempts by the Trojans.

With 12 points, senior Gavin Meana was MFL MarMac’s top scorer. Fellow senior Cayden Ball added eight points and notched a team-high eight assists. His stat line also included five rebounds and a steal. Senior Kale Miene tallied eight points, four rebounds, two steals and an assist. In addition to four points and a steal, senior Max Havlicek led the Bulldogs with seven rebounds. Freshman Wyatt Powell contributed three points and three rebounds, as well as two each in the assists and steals categories.

MFL MarMac will try to pick up its first win this week. The team hosted Edgewood-Colesburg Dec. 7, then played at South Winneshiek on Dec. 8. The Bulldogs will host West Central this Friday, Dec. 11.
