Marlin Walter Dettman, 62, of McGregor, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2020, following a long and courageous battle with cancer with his family by his side. Marlin was born Feb. 4, 1958, to Norbert and Mildred (Nuehring) Dettman in Postville. In 1967, Marlin, along with his parents and grandparents, moved from the farm to Luana. He graduated from MFL High School with the class of 1975.

Throughout the years, Marlin worked for Chase Manufacturing for three years, Tama Star in Marquette, and, in 1987, went to work for Bruce Dillman Equipment, now Astec Industries, where he worked until recently. He loved his job and everyone at Dillman Equipment. Marlin played softball for Gene’s Place and enjoyed hunting, fishing and horseback riding. He felt very lucky to have Bridget and his family that he loved so much.

Surviving Marlin are his wife, Bridget Marie Dettman of McGregor; his children, Heidi Koehn (Matt Berger) of Elkader, Jake (Amy) Dettman of Elkader; Colton Dettman (Jordan Dressler) of Monona, and Keaton Dettman of Farmersburg; step-children, Megan Penney (Josh Webber) of West Union, Lane Penney (Jordan Kuehl) of Manchester, and Jordan (Jeanie) Panka; 11 grandchildren; father-in-law, Cecil “Bud” Oakes of Froelich; brothers, Harlan (Karla) Dettman and Owen (Twila) Dettman; brother-in-law, Robert Oakes of Lamont; sister-in-law, Charlene Gastineau of Brentwood, Calif.; three nieces and one nephew.

Marlin was preceded in death by his parents, Norbert and Mildred Dettman, and mother-in-law, Charlene Putz.

There was a public visitation on Nov. 14, at the First Congregation Church in McGregor, with Rev. William Gentry as the officiant.

The family will have a private graveside service at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in rural McGregor.
