It was another competitive performance put in by Central’s cross country team at the Oct. 6 meet in South Winneshiek. The team once again saw medalists and season best times as the runners prepare for next week’s conference meet.

Beginning with the varsity girls, Delaney Scherf and Hannah Asche led the way, finishing 10th and 11th, respectively. They both had a time of 21:34, good enough to medal, and it was a season best for Scherf. In the field of 52 runners, Allie Mussman finished 23rd, with a season best 22:48. Other team members finished outside the top 25, including Jaydin Dettman, who ran a career best 23:37 for 31st, Taylor Moser (33rd), Maria Medberry (42nd) and Haley Mueller (43rd).

As a team, Central finished fourth of eight teams with a score of 108, compared with the 54 scored by meet winner Decorah.

The varsity boys produced two course best times against the field of 47 runners. Brayden Finley finished 31st with a 19:48 and Corey Webber came in 33rd with a 19:54.

As for the JV girls team, they saw one career best among its four runners, as Carly Kluesner finished 39th out of 65 runners with a 27:24. Mylee Wingert finished 44th, Madylen Gregerson 52nd and Eva Embretson 58th.

Discussing the meet, assistant coach Martha Bauder said, “We had another excellent weather day and many good performances to go along with it. One of the biggest things we improved on was that the top five varsity girls were almost under a two-minute spread. We’ve been working on that, and it was good to see it happen. Plus, with good individual times. Nearly everyone had either their second best time of the season or career best or season best or course best. With this being our last meet before conference, it should help us approach practice with renewed energy and confidence.”

Even the junior high runners saw season best performances. The junior high girls’ hard work and effort were rewarded with two season best times for runners Layla Embretson, who finished 44th at 17:28, and Alexis Thiese, who finished 52nd with a 18:28 time. Teammate Brooke Tieden finished 65th with a 23:08.

The junior high boys found success as Gavin Holst came back from some hip soreness to finish third out of 69 runners with a season and course best time of 12:17. He was also just six seconds off the eighth grade school record for the course. As for the rest of the team, Braxton Bormann finished 31st with a season best 14:22, followed by Caden Fette (33rd), Bryce Heller (63rd) and Michael White (69th). The team finished in third place with a score of 76, as winning Decorah finished with a score of 19.

“Both the boys and girls junior high teams had a very good day. With many season bests, we are excited for the conference meet to see how high up we can finish. Both teams have great potential to finish near the top,” Bauder said.

The cross country team heads next to the Upper Iowa Conference meet at North Fayette Valley on Thursday, Oct. 15.
