High school sports canceled until Oct. 12

In a letter sent out to parents and guardians, on Oct. 4, the Prairie du Chien School District said it will be shutting down face-to-face learning in the high school for two weeks beginning Monday, Oct. 5. There will be 100 percent virtual learning for high school students for those two weeks (Oct. 5-Oct. 16).

The shutdown is due to an increase in the COVID-19 positivity rate and close contacts among staff and students within the high school.

Bluff View, B.A. Kennedy, and the Life Skills House will continue with the same educational platform of face-to-face and online learning for students. Students, parents, and staff will be notified if there are additional future educational changes to programming.

Letters were also sent stating that a student and a staff member at the high school have tested positive for COVID-19.

“We are actively working with the Crawford County Public Health Department to quickly identify, notify, and quarantine any students or staff who may have come into close contact with them and who may be at risk of getting sick,” the letter said. “We are also cleaning and disinfecting the school to control the spread of illness.”

As of 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7, there were 91 students under quarantine, and 13 staff/non-faculty coaches under quarantine for a total of 104 individuals within the Prairie du Chien School District.

The school board held a special, closed-session meeting the evening of Oct. 5 to have a COVID-19  review as well as discuss personnel.

All high school sports have been cancelled until the next school board meeting on Oct. 12. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the high school.

On Oct. 6, Wisconsin’s largest union of educators held a media briefing to discuss the situation that students, teachers and school staff are in as the pandemic continues to spread throughout the state.

“The virus is everywhere. Wisconsin’s top medical examiner is sounding the alarm for urgent action. And public school educators couldn’t agree more,” said Ron Martin, an eighth grade teacher and president of the Wisconsin Education Association Council. Martin’s remarks came after last week’s increase in positive COVID cases.

A school re-entry plan was established by the Prairie du Chien School District before the school year began in September.

When the plan was established, the district stated that the re-entry plan is a fluid, guiding document that will continue to evolve and change as the COVID-19 situation evolves and changes, and that the district will communicate additional information as updates become available.
