The MFL MarMac volleyball team went 1-1 last week, defeating Central and dropping a game to Turkey Valley.

The Bulldogs faced Central on Sept. 29, in Monona, sweeping the match 3-0. The first set ended 25-15, but the second took extra points, 28-26. The final set was also close, as MFL MarMac rallied from behind to beat the Warriors 26-24.

Riley Moreland continued to lead the Bulldog attack, smashing 12 of the team’s 21 kills. She also had a team-high two blocks and was one of the leaders with 10 digs. Fourteen of her 15 serve attempts were successful, including two aces.

Grace Anderson earned three kills and a block, while Kayden Gillitzer tallied two kills and three assists. Lexy Johnson racked up a team-leading 15 digs and completed 16 of her 20 serves, with one ace. Lakota Morrissey led MFL MarMac with nine assists and dug three balls, and Abby Schellhorn had four assists and four digs and was 7-9 serving. She had two of the Bulldogs’ seven aces.

MFL MarMac was back in action Oct. 1, losing 3-1 at Turkey Valley. The Trojans won the first set easily, 25-11, then eked out the second, 25-23. The Bulldogs earned a 25-22 victory in set three, but couldn’t sustain the momentum in the fourth, falling 25-15.

Moreland rattled off 16 kills in the game, in addition to a block and 13 digs. She completed 17 of 18 serve attempts, with one of the team’s three aces. Gillitzer had three kills and a block, Anderson two kills and two blocks and Aleyna Rodriguez two kills and one block. 

Johnson picked up 21 digs and had another big serving game, making 14 of 15 attempts with two aces. Miranda Lang dug out eight balls and made 10 of 11 serves, while Morrissey earned 14 assists.

The Bulldogs’ overall record is now 5-8, and the team is 3-1 in the Upper Iowa Conference. MFL MarMac will play two conference games this week, hosting West Central on Tuesday, Oct. 6, then South Winn on Thursday, Oct. 8.
