Herbert “Herbie” Brookens, 79, passed away peacefully on Friday, Sept. 18, 2020, with his family by his side in Bunnell, Fla.

Herb was born May 17, 1941, in Bloomington, to Elgie and Lucille Brookens. He graduated from Bloomington High School in 1959 and went on to join the Navy. After Herb’s time in the Navy, he returned to the Midwest, and married Charlotte Matousek in 1964.

Herb worked as a mechanic and a truck driver, before starting his career wit the city of Prairie du Chien, working his way up to utilities director, retiring in 1999. He loved to fish, drive truck and his coffee breaks with his buddies. But most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends on the Mississippi River. Herb was known for his kind and generous ways. He was a loving husband, father, poppy, and uncle, he will be greatly missed by all.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Charlotte; children, Rick of Prairie du Chien, Vicky (Jerry) Claypoole of Bunnell, Fla., and Mandy (Jeffrey) Cooke of Buffalo, N.Y.; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elgie and Lucille; sister, Treasure Myhre; and brother-in-law, Mervin Myhre.

Arrangements are being made for a memorial service in Prairie du Chien this summer.
