During the Prairie du Chien School Board meeting Monday night, there was a COVID-19 update. As of Tuesday, there were 17 or more people (staff and students) who are under quarantine in the Prairie du Chien School District. The exact number is not yet known.

Each individual will be coming out of quarantine at different times. The people quarantined either tested positive or were in close contact with someone who tested positive.

There are five students who have tested positive. Two of the students are full time virtual students. There are five people awaiting test results. One Prairie du Chien sports coach has tested positive. Another coach has been quarantined due to close contact with a positive case. Both coaches are non-faculty.

Superintendent Andy Banasik said letters regarding the positive students were sent out to parents and guardians district-wide. If a child had close contact with a person with COVID-19, parents should have received a separate letter with special instructions about monitoring symptoms, testing, and how to keep others in their home from getting sick. If a child did not have close contact with a person with COVID-19 in the Prairie du Chien schools, the parents will not receive another letter.

Two tickets have been allowed per athlete for in-person viewing of Prairie du Chien sports events so far this season. Banasik said many fans have been taking advantage of watching the games via the NFHS Network, which is free for Prairie du Chien fans this year. He said the football game on Friday night got about 2,000 views, and a recent volleyball match got 700.

It was also noted that students in the district have done very well with following the COVID rules so far this school year. The district is continuing to follow the recommendations of the Crawford County Health Department.

“We’ve been very pleased with the students wearing masks,” said ACP/Testing Coordinator Karen Sjoberg.

In other business, the board approved of buying an M18 Force Logic Press tool for approximately $3,500 to help with the installation of Ferguson single and double water fountains due to COVID. The district will install double water fountains in as many locations as possible. There will be a total of 11 fountains. The single water fountains cost about $1,145.90 each. The double fountains cost an estimated $1,593.15 each. The total cost for the fountains is expected to be roughly $16,000. The district is still negotiating on the price. In addition, it is hoped that the fountains and the Force Logic Press tool can be paid for through COVID grant funds.
