The McGregor Council, at its Sept. 16 meeting, awarded a contract to Midwest Concrete, Inc., of Peosta, for the FEMA Alternate Project, which will involve improvements to Ash and A streets.

Midwest Concrete’s bid came in at $305,279.62—16 percent below the engineer’s estimated probable cost.

The council also approved plans, specifications, form of contract and opinion of cost for the work.

The project will consist of road construction and utility work, including reconstruction of Ash Street from Ann Street to the south end of a previously completed Ash Street pavement rehabilitation project. Existing water and sanitary sewer utilities will be abandoned and new ones installed. New stormwater intakes will connect to the existing stormwater infrastructure.

Another part of the project will take place at the inlet at 119 A Street, where a stormwater intake will be installed that will connect to an existing manhole.

Business Enhancement Grants approved

At the meeting, the council approved four matching funding requests from three long-time McGregor businesses to the city’s recently-created Business Enhancement Grant Program. The program provides economic development grants to businesses for the redevelopment and improvement of buildings within the community.

A grant request for $4,100 from Paper Moon to replace an air conditioning unit was approved, as was $4,570 for Rivertown Fine Books for tuck pointing of the building exterior and installation of LED lighting in the store.

River Junction Trade Company will receive $5,525 to repaint and repair the parapet on its 312 Main St. building, as well as another $4,692.50 to repaint and repair the parapet on the 314 Main St. location.
