The MFL MarMac football team upped its record to 2-0 Sept. 4, with a convincing 35-13 victory at Alburnett.

Like the previous week, where the Bulldogs’ special teams tallied two touchdowns before the offense even took the field, Friday night’s game got off to a fast start. Just 13 seconds in, sophomore Karter Decker returned the opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown, and MFL MarMac went up 7-0.

Around a minute later, after a huge completion from senior quarterback Max Havlicek to senior receiver Cayden Ball, junior running back Cullen McShane scored from five yards out, giving the Bulldogs a 13-0 advantage.

Soon after, however, Alburnett went 60 yards to the end zone, cutting the MFL MarMac lead to 13-6.

The Bulldogs didn’t back down, though. In the first quarter yet, Decker rushed for a touchdown that made it 21-6. Before the half, Havlicek took the ball in himself to put MFL MarMac up 28-6.

Neither team put points on the board again until the fourth quarter. After a Pirate touchdown trimmed the lead to 28-13, the Bulldogs closed the game out with another touchdown from Decker, bringing the final score to 35-13.

Havlicek completed just three of 11 passes Friday night, but still racked up 86 yards. He threw one interception. Ball had one of those three catches, for 62 yards.

Junior Gabe McGeough caught a 16-yard pass, and also led the team in rushing, with 89 yards on 15 carries. McShane carried the ball 10 times for 51 yards and a touchdown, while Decker compiled 41 yards and two touchdowns on eight attempts.

Defensively, McShane led the Bulldogs with 10.5 tackles—8 of them solo—and also had one sack. Decker tallied 9.5 total tackles and sophomore Austin Schlee picked up 7. Junior Kaden Stocker had an interception.

MFL MarMac looks to move to 3-0 this week with a home match-up against undefeated Wapsie Valley on Sept. 11.
