Prairie du Chien held a scaled down band camp last week with smaller groups of students. The spacing in the above photo will be very similar to what will occur this fall. (Photo submitted)

There are plans for all of the bands and choirs (high school and middle school) in the Prairie du Chien School District as to how they will practice and perform safely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We currently have plans for all of our bands and choirs to rehearse outside,” said High School Band Director Matt Lenz. “There are some recommendations for music personal protective equipment that will help to minimize the spread of aerosols indoors, but we will be outside as long as the weather allows. For us, personal protective equipment would involve coverings over the bells of instruments and special masks.”

Formal performances have been canceled for now, but Lenz said he and other members of the school district are checking into possible alternatives to in-person performances.

“We will work within our groups to create options for virtual performances,” said Lenz. “Possibly something recorded during class and posted to the web or live-streamed.”
