Rural PdC gun range reopens
After being damaged by severe flooding in Sept. 2019, the Prairie Rod and Gun Club gun range reopened Saturday, July 25, after recent flood repair work was completed. The flooding stripped turf from the 100-yard target berm south to the parking lot, and the washout covered the area with debris.
Repair work was done by professional contractors as well as volunteer labor from club members. It was a two-part project with initial work beginning in March and landscaping and reseeding in June. Repairs involved rebuilding the 25- and 50-yard target berms and reshaping the range contours from the 100-yard target berm to the shooting benches. Runoff is now directed to drainage ditches paralleling the range. In addition, both drainage ditches were cleaned and reshaped.
The private, open to members only, gun range is located at 62664 Mill Coulee Rd., off Highway 35, about four miles north of Prairie du Chien.
It is also used by various law enforcement agencies for firearms training.
Plus, the Prairie Rod and Gun Club, as a public service, opens the range to the general public for a free, pre-deer season sight-in at scheduled times the week before the Wisconsin deer season.
Members using the range observe carry in/carry out practices and leave no trace of their having been there, leaving it neat and uncluttered.
Memberships can be purchased at Stark’s Sport Shop, 119 W. Blackhawk Ave., Prairie du Chien.
