On July 16, at 3:16 a.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a two-vehicle traffic crash on Highway 35 near Caya Road in Seneca Township.

David Hemmer, 63, of Prairie du Chien, was operating a semi-tractor trailer north on Highway 35. Carolyn Kryzer, 34, of Winona, Minn., was operating a 2020 Dodge Durango south on Highway 35. Kryzer crossed the center line, traveled into the northbound lane, and hit the semi head-on.

As a result, the Dodge Durango overturned in the middle of the road and became fully engulfed in flames. The semi traveled off the highway into a marshy area between Highway 35 and the railway tracks.

Hemmer escaped with non-life-threatening injuries. Kryzer was pronounced dead at the accident scene. There were no passengers in either of the vehicles involved.

Highway 35 was closed for about eight hours due to the accident. The crash remains under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were the Seneca Fire Department, Eastman Fire Department, Seneca First Responders, Tri-State Regional EMS, Wisconsin State Patrol, Crawford County Highway Department, Crawford County Coroner’s Office, Prairie du Chien Police Department, Crossing Rivers Health, Milo’s Towing Service and Tegeler Wrecker Service.
