The MFL MarMac softball team is now 6-3, after splitting doubleheaders with West Central and South Winneshiek and losing a non-conference match-up with Sumner-Fredericksburg last week.

The Bulldogs won the first game of the June 29 doubleheader with West Central by a score of 9-4. Lauren Haberichter picked up the win, holding the Blue Devils to seven hits and two earned runs over seven innings. She amassed 15 strikeouts, a season best.

Keri Picha led the Bulldog offense, going a perfect 3-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Abby Schellhorn singled, drove in two runs and scored once. Haberichter and Abby Koslowski each had a hit and two RBIs.

Game two was a high-scoring affair, with West Central winning 16-15 in extra innings. MFL MarMac had two separate six-run innings—one in the first and another in the third—to take a 13-5 lead. The Blue Devils didn’t back down, though, scoring four times in both the fourth and sixth innings and twice in the seventh to pull ahead 15-14. MFL MarMac tied the game 15-15 in the bottom of the seventh, but West Central pushed one across in the top of the eighth for the victory.

Jordan Schubert had a four-hit night for the Bulldogs, stole four bases and scored two runs. Schellhorn singled and doubled, drove in two runs and scored twice, while Lauren Kishman went 2-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Savannah Schaller singled, drove in two runs and crossed the plate once herself.

MFL MarMac was back in action July 1, in a doubleheader against South Winn. The Bulldogs won the opening game 4-0 behind another stellar pitching performance by Haberichter, who held the Warriors to just one hit in seven innings. She struck out eight batters.

Offensively, Koslowski tallied two hits for the Bulldogs, including a double, and drove in a run. Schellhorn tripled, knocked in a run and scored twice. Brinan Berger singled and scored once.

MFL MarMac couldn’t keep the momentum going in game two, losing to South Winn 9-4. The Warriors did the majority of their damage in the third inning, when they churned out seven runs.

Picha singled twice and drove in one run. Schaller also picked up two hits and scored one of the Bulldog runs. Schubert and Haberichter each went 1-4 with an RBI.

Things didn’t get any easier July 3 against Sumner-Fred. The Cougars scored five times in the opening frame and built the lead from there, winning 13-5.

Schubert had four hits for the second time in a week. Her stat line also included two RBIs and a run scored. Kishman had a 2-4 night, and Berger went 1-4 with an RBI. Koslowski drove in two runs.

The Bulldogs’ regular season concludes this week, with a doubleheader at Kee on Monday, July 6, followed by doubleheaders at Turkey Valley and Postville on Tuesday, July 7 and Wednesday, July 8.

MFL MarMac’s first postseason game will be Monday, July 13. The team will host Postville at 7 p.m.
