The Clayton Ridge/Central (CR/C) War Eagles have started the season 0-4, dropping a doubleheader to North Fayette Valley and games to MFL MarMac and South Winneshiek last week.

The first game of the doubleheader against North Fayette Valley on June 15 looked promising, as CR/C took a 5-2 lead into the fourth inning. But then the War Eagles were bombarded with a four-run fourth inning and a five-run fifth inning by the TigerHawks, who were gifted 13 walks by War Eagle pitchers. The War Eagles had also committed six errors by the time the TigerHawks added another run in the seventh. The final score was 12-5.

Leading the War Eagles was Oakley Harbaugh, who went 2-4 with three RBI. Hazen Loan was 1-2 and scored two runs, while Caleb Helle went 2-3 with a double, run and walk.

Even with more hits, a higher team batting average and a one-run lead heading into the second inning, the War Eagles also lost game two, 9-3. The TigerHawks put up a seven-run top of the second, placing the game out of reach.

The War Eagles were led by Drake Ostrander, who went 1-2 with a double and scored a run, and Caleb Helle, who went 1-2 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored.

With the doubleheader behind them, the War Eagles faced MFL Mar-Mac June 16. While the offense attempted to mount a comeback in the top of the sixth inning, scoring four runs and tying the game at 5-5, the team could not keep the Bulldogs off the bases, giving up six earned runs, eight walks and hit two batters. The game ended with a final score of 9-5.

Team leaders for the War Eagles were Caleb Helle, who went 2-4 with a double and scored two runs, along with Harbaugh, who went 3-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

In the final game of the week, the South Winneshiek Warriors defeated the War Eagles 13-0. It was a game that saw CR/C get five hits—all singles—in 21 at bats.

The pitching staff gave up 12 hits and nine earned runs, walked seven batters and hit another, while also allowing seven stolen bases.

Caleb Helle went a strong four innings, striking out five batters along the way.

This week, the War Eagles will look to turn  it around with a doubleheader against the 2-3 Kee Hawks on June 22. On Tuesday, June 23, CR/C will travel to Turkey Valley. Then it’s two days off before a doubleheader Friday night, June 26, against the undefeated South Winneshiek Warriors.
