Richard J. Kozelka, 80, of Prairie du Chien, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, May 22.

He was born on July 24, 1939, in Prairie du Chien, the son of Ralph and Albina (Balk) Kozelka. He was a graduate of Campion High School, where he later joined the U.S. National Guard. In his early years, Richard was a member of a popular local band called Johnny & Joe’s Cowboys. He played guitar, fiddle and sang in the band. He was very proud of his time in this band and still cherishes his beloved guitar. Richard soon carried on the family tradition and joined his father working at Kozelka’s Men’s Wear. Richard and his two other siblings eventually took over the store, becoming the second generation of Kozelkas to carry on the business. He spent 45 plus years serving his community and always greeting every customer with a smile. While working at the store, Richard met the love of his life and married Patricia L. Walters on October 23, 1976. Richard was a proud supporter of the community. He believed in giving back as he knew and appreciated every customer that came in to his store. He was a proud father who never missed one sporting activity and was always there to cheer on his four children. Richard enjoyed his woodworking, collecting of antiques and playing cards. He had an infectious smile and loved to make people laugh, but his most prized possession was his grandchildren.

Richard is survived by his wife of 43 years, Patricia (Walters); his son, Randy (Kristen) Kozelka; daughters, Tammy, Lori (Oscar Eastman) Kozelka, and Jennifer (Kyle) Schauf; seven grandchildren, Brandon, Derek, Taylor, Chase, Bridgitte, Alexis and Isabelle; his brother, Thomas (Janet) Kozelka; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Albina Kozelka; sister Marie Wall; brother-in-law Joseph Wall; and his beloved four-legged friend and companion lady, aka “Ladybug.”

Per Richard’s wishes, there will be no funeral services. The family is planning to have a Celebration of Life for him at a later date. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.
