The Prairie du Chien Country Club and the Barnyard 9 Golf Course opened for golf on Friday, April 24 with enthusiastic results.

“We had a fairly full tee sheet on Friday. It was good on Saturday, and we had a full tee sheet on Sunday,” said Prairie du Chien Country Club General Manager Dennis Miller. “The pace of play has been really good. It’s gone really smooth.”

Miller said motorized golf carts are not allowed, but some golfers are renting pull carts. Tee times have been spaced out from groups teeing off every 10 minutes to teeing off every 15 minutes.

“Everyone has been good at keeping their social distance,” said Miller, who also noted that there are little markers instead of flags, and golfers are told not to touch the markers. Also, the cups have been turned upside down so they are a lot shallower and linksters don’t have to reach down in to get their ball. They can retrieve the ball without touching anything else. There are no rakes for sand traps and no ball washers.

“It’s a bit different game of golf right now,” said Miller. “But, people are enjoying playing again.”

Miller said Prairie du Chien Country Club was scheduled to open on March 27, but then had to close because of Governor Tony Evers’ “stay at home” order.

Golfing at Prairie du Chien Country Club is from 8 a.m. till dark seven days a week. Miller said people need to call ahead or go online to schedule tee times. Golfers paying greens fees can pay online or by phone call.

Miller said carryout food and beverages have been available to consume off premises. “Friday nights have been extremely busy,” he said about the club’s Friday night fish fry.

Lunches and dinners are served from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Customers need to call ahead. Meals can be picked up “curbside” or customers can come in to pick up their orders.

Miller said the country club offers play cards for 10, 20, 30, or 40 rounds of nine holes of golf. Purchasers of play cards get extra nine-hole rounds, the number of which depends upon how many rounds they purchase. The extra plays will run until May 15. In addition, Miller said first-year memberships are 15 percent off.

“Hopefully, things will keep getting better,” said Miller.

The Barnyard 9 Golf Course, located north of Prairie du Chien on County K, also opened for golf on Friday, April 24.

The Barnyard’s Facebook page said they and the golfers will be respectful of restrictions such as no motorized carts, no touching of flagsticks, social distancing and other such restrictions.

“It went well,” said Barnyard 9 Superintendent Barron Dillman about the golfing over the weekend. “It was pretty steady. It was mostly members and we had about two groups per hour.”

The Barnyard’s tee times are every 15 minutes on the quarter hour. People can go to www.sportsunlimitedcampground.com and click “Golf the Barn Yard 9.” From there, they will be guided to select tee times and enter payment.

Golfers are advised not to tee off until the group ahead of them has moved to the next hole and teed off.

Dillman said the cups at the Barnyard 9 have also been modified so nobody needs to remove flagsticks, and they can get their ball without touching anything else.

The Barnyard 9 Clubhouse is closed. Golfers can pay by phone or online.

Memberships can also be downloaded by using the website address listed above and mailing it in. The membership cards will be mailed back. A few changes to the website will be coming soon.

The Barnyard 9 Facebook page reminds golfers that golfing in Wisconsin can revert back to being closed if golfers do not observe the rules. This is what happened in Illinois.
