Start delayed for ‘Lawn Chair,’ ‘Kids’ gardening programs

Lawn Chair Learning and Kids in the Garden, two programs of the Prairie du Chien Parks and Recreation Department, are still in the works for this summer—provided the coronavirus and social distancing rules don’t interrupt plans. 

Lawn Chair Learning is an adult gardening education opportunity offered for free. It typically would have started at the St. Feriole Island Memorial Gardens on April 21, and a different topic would be presented biweekly on Tuesday evenings (5:48 p.m.). According to organizer Donna Teynor, all classes are cancelled through May, and the hope is for the program to officially begin June 2, with a class on herbs.

Kids in the Garden is another free activity, obviously geared toward children of all ages and their families. This is also held in the Memorial Gardens and focuses on a fun and hands-on project every other week, concluding with a StoryWalk. This program isn’t scheduled to start until June 17 (pizza garden planting/new root box), and Teynor said she hopes it can go on as planned. 

“Even if we’re outside, there’s some concern, so we want to err on the side of safety,” she stated.

Teynor asks those interested in these programs to watch the Courier Press and the city Facebook page, as well as the UW-Extension website, to keep up-to-date with the evolving schedule.
