Helen Margaret Jennings, 88, of Manchester, formerly of Garber, passed away on Friday, April 10, 2020, at her daughter’s home in Manchester.

Because of the current COVID-19 concerns, there will be a Private Family Service and Interment held at this time.

Helen was born on Sept. 16, 1931, in Colesburg, the daughter of Isaac “Dale” and Margaret (Bray) Walters.  Helen was raised in rural Colesburg and was a graduate of Colesburg High School.

On Nov. 10, 1949, Helen was united in marriage to Clyde Jennings at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Garber.  Two children were born to this union. The couple farmed together on the family farm outside of Garber and then retired to the Gernand Retirement Village in Strawberry Point. Clyde passed away in 2017.  Helen then resided at The Meadows in Manchester.

Helen was a longtime member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Garber and also a member of First Congregational Church in Elkader. She was the secretary at Mt. Harmony Cemetery in rural Garber for over 50 years. Helen enjoyed genealogy, visiting with friends and family, cooking and baking, and sharing her creations with friends and family. She was a recipient of the 2012 KCRG 9 Who Care Award and also the Presidential Medal for Philanthropy for her dedicated work with genealogy and working with others. 

Survivors include her two children, Edwin (Tina) Jennings of Strawberry Point and Jean Vorwald of Manchester; four grandchildren, Shiloh, Tiffany, Christel, and Christopher; three great-grandchildren, Connor, Addalyn, and Avery; one brother, Jim (Joan) Walters of Guttenberg; and several nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 67 years, Clyde; two brothers, Darrell and John; one sister, Lois Hill; and her son-in-law, Mike Vorwald.
