At around midnight today (Wednesday, April 8), the Prairie du Chien Police Department responded to the 200 block of East Wisconsin Street for a report of two juveniles looking into the windows of a home. A description was provided by the reporting party of the suspects.

A half-hour later, officers responded to the 100 block of East Blackhawk Avenue for a report of two people who gained entry into an apartment while the resident was sleeping. Officers responded to that address and learned the suspects had fled the area prior to officers’ arrival. Within a few minutes, two juveniles were located in the downtown area and, when officers attempted to speak with them, they both fled on foot.

After a foot pursuit, one 14-year-old male was taken into custody and later released to his parents. Various charges will be referred to Crawford County Human Services and the Crawford County District Attorney’s Office for this juvenile.

“Over the course of the last three weeks many people have made comments to me about how crime must be down because everyone is staying home. We are seeing the same number of reported crimes,” Police Chief Kyle Teynor said. “The very unfortunate thing about times like this is people who have a criminal mind see this more as an opportunity than a chance to respect their neighbor.”

Each spring, the police department sees an increase in reports of thefts from vehicles, garages and homes. This spring will not be any different. Teynor advises residents and business owners to lock their cars, lock garages and homes.

“If you see the neighbor’s garage door left open, give them a call and remind them to put it down,” he advised. “An open garage door could be seen as an invitation for the entire neighborhood.”
