George N. “Butch” Vorwald, 82, of Bloomington, passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2020, at home surrounded by his family.

Butch was born in Texas on March 30, 1937, the son of George L. and Marie (Schmitz) Vorwald. He went to elementary school at St. Mary’s in Bloomington and then at St. Clement in Lancaster before going on to attend Loras Academy in Dubuque, Iowa, and graduating from Lancaster High School. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army, where he served as a paratrooper and medic from 1955-1961. Butch then went on to a career as a bricklayer and mason. Many people have asked what he did in his free time or what he did for fun, and the answer is always the same: he worked. He worked hard and he loved it. On Dec 31, 1990, Butch married Bets Martin. They spent 37 wonderful years together building a life they loved. But when asked, they would tell you it was 74 years—37 for each of them. Butch was a man of few words, but when he spoke, his words were as vital as his chuckle was infectious. He was proud of his children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments. Butch loved his wife, family and friends deeply and they thought the world of him.

Butch is survived by his wife, Bets; four children, Jackie (Robert “Buck”) Hampton, Kevin (Ruth) Vorwald, Shawna (Luke Steiner) Atterbury, and Michelle (Aaron Zitzner) Atterbury; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Butch was preceded in death by his son, Brian; and two brothers, Bill and Dan Vorwald.

A public Mass of Christian Burial followed by Military Honors will be at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, 2020, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington, with Father John Meinholz officiating. There will be no public visitation, but a celebration in honor of Butch’s life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of plants, flowers and other gifts, a George N. “Butch” Vorwald Memorial Fund has been established. The Martin Schwartz Funeral Home and Crematory, in Bloomington, is assisting the family.
