One of three people injured March 8 in a collision between a horse-drawn buggy and a pickup truck was still hospitalized at press time.

Mary Miller, 21, of Edgewood, is at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics recovering from surgery. She is also still under observation for other injuries from the accident, according to someone close to the family. Her injuries are not life-threatening.

Miller was a passenger in a horse-drawn buggy that was hit head-on by Alex Hyde, 26, of Guttenberg. Also in the buggy were Adam Hershberger, 21, and his 17-year-old sister, Nettie, both of Edgewood. They were hospitalized in Manchester for treatment of their injuries. Hyde, who was driving a 2002 Toyota Tacoma, was not injured. The Hershberger's horse was killed.

The accident occurred just around 10:30 p.m. on Hilton Road north of Harvest Road, between Elkport and Edgewood. The horse and buggy were traveling southbound on the shoulder of the road. Hyde, who was traveling northbound, crossed the center line. It is believed that the buggy was clearly marked in the front and back as required by law.

Hyde was taken into custody and charged with operating while intoxicated causing serious injury by vehicle, use of an electronic communication device while driving, carrying weapons while intoxicated, driving on the wrong side of a two-way highway, failure to use safety belt, and open container.

According to Clayton County Sheriff Mike Tschirgi, vehicle-buggy accidents are uncommon in this area and are particularly uncommon at this time of night.
