Koenig has agreed to accept role

There will be no second term as Monona’s mayor for Lynn “Marty” Martinson. Despite receiving the most write-in votes (54) in the Nov. 5 city election, Martinson, who opted not to run again, has declined the position.

“I’m honored to be elected for a second term, however, my time and energy need to be devoted to my immediate family,” said Martinson, reading from a letter at the Nov. 18 city council meeting.

No candidates filed to be on the ballot Nov. 5, making Martinson a popular write-in choice for Monona residents. With his refusal, the position falls to runner-up Eric Koenig, who garnered 27 of 127 write-in votes. On Friday, Monona City Clerk Barb Collins confirmed Koenig has agreed to accept the role.

Martinson said this will make the transition easier.

“I feel it’s better that I don’t agree to go for six months or three months,” he stated. “We’ve got budgeting coming up, and it just makes it confusing.”

“We’ve had a great two years and a tremendous council that’s accomplished a lot,” he continued. “I hate to leave, but there are things that come up in life that you’ve got to do.”

UTV ordinance amendment approved

In other news from the Nov. 18 meeting, the council adopted an ordinance amending the city’s code regarding off-road utility vehicles and snowmobiles. The move allows UTVs to be operated on city streets as long as drivers follow certain safety provisions. Previously, riders could only travel on specified streets to travel in and out of Monona; they could not make stops or go from point A to point B within town.

Even with the change, people should note that golf carts are still prohibited. ATVs and riding lawnmowers are also prohibited unless used for snow removal or other maintenance.
