The new district administrator for Prairie du Chien Schools, Bryce Bird, released a letter to the community last week stating he’s honored and excited to serve in the capacity. Bird stepped into the position after outgoing superintendent Bob Smudde, who took a different leadership position in the Dodgeville School District, left Sept. 13.

Officially, Bird is interim district administrator. This means, he will be working on a part-time basis through the end of June 2020.

“This district is highly regarded as one of the top school districts in the state of Wisconsin. This tradition of excellence is due to the support and partnering of community members and the hard work of our students and staff,” Bird stated.

“I was born in Prairie du Chien and raised on a farm near Seneca. I have over 30 years’ experience in public education through teaching, coaching, and holding administrative positions,” he said.

Most recently, Bird served 13 years as district administrator in the Riverdale School District. Prior to that, he was administrator at the Wauzeka–Steuben School District for five years.

“Going forward, I will be building on the work that is already established here. I believe we must equip our students with the skills to thrive in life through a quality and comprehensive educational experience,” he wrote in the letter. “With today’s budget constraints, schools need to be even more innovative to stretch resources to meet the diverse needs of our students. I continue to be impressed with the number of opportunities this district provides for all students.”

Bird said the district’s plan is to select his full-time replacement to begin with the district by July 1, 2020.

“I welcome your input to discuss ways to improve what we are doing,” he shared.
