UPDATED MONDAY, OCT. 28, 10:30 A.M.

An Illinois man was detained by local law enforcement following a Friday morning shooting near Eastman that left another man critically injured, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff Dale McCullick said there is no threat to the public.

On Friday, Oct. 25, at about 1:20 a.m., Crawford County Dispatch received a 911 call from a woman who stated she was in a vehicle in a driveway and the male driver of the vehicle had been shot in the head as they were going out of the driveway.

The female caller, later identified as Jennifer Glass, 40, of Soldiers Grove, said the back window of the truck was blown out from the bullet and she had no idea where she was. Dispatch was able to locate the caller by cell phone coordinates, which showed she was on Martin Lane in Eastman Township.

The woman told Crawford County authorities she and the male victim, Jason Melvin, 47, of Monticello, had given a man they met at a local tavern a ride to a cabin where he was staying because he was out celebrating his birthday and was too intoxicated to drive. The woman said, when they arrived at the cabin, they went into an RV-type camper parked beside the cabin and continued to celebrate with Lee Kennedy, 47, of Rosco, Ill. Glass told officers they were there for about 45 minutes and, when they were driving away, someone shot into the truck through the back window, striking Melvin in the back of the head.

Melvin was taken to Crossing Rivers Health and MedFlighted to UW Hospital, where he remained in critical condition Monday, according to the sheriff’s department. Glass was not injured. Kennedy was taken into custody by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department with assistance from the La Crosse County Tactical Team and its BearCat. He was detained for questioning with possible charges to follow.

The Wisconsin State crime lab and Wisconsin State Patrol were called to assist with processing and diagramming the scene. Assisting at the scene were the Eastman First Responders and Fire Department, Tri-State EMS and the Prairie du Chien Police Department. The shooting remains under investigation.
