County N beginning to take shape, Spring Lake Inn doing well despite construction
By Ted Pennekamp
The County N reconstruction project in Crawford County is beginning to take shape, especially at its intersection with Highway 35 and going up the hill.
Despite the construction this summer and fall, Spring Lake Inn, a popular restaurant at the intersection of County N and Highway 35, has been doing good business.
“We’ve been doing good during the week and are still really busy on Fridays and Saturdays,” said waitress Nicole Gokey.
It may not be readily apparent to some motorists, but Spring Lake Inn can be accessed by turning off of Highway 35 and driving into the construction zone for a short distance, going behind and around the Spring Lake Inn Motel to the normal parking area. There is a sign pointing the way to Spring Lake Inn.
“Some people slow down and drive past, and then turn around and find the way,” said Gokey on a relatively busy lunchtime Friday. “People are finding us.”
Construction began in June and is continuing on the Famechon Hill project on County N which is estimated at $3,868,000. The prime contractor is Peter James of H. James and Sons of Fennimore.
Crawford County received a federal grant for $2.98 million for the Famechon Hill project, which involves reconstruction of the intersection of Highway 35 and County N and also 1.46 miles of County N going up the hill from Highway 35. The plan consists of reconstruction of multiple substandard geometric features including horizontal curves, vertical curves and steep grades that will be improved. County N will be closed to through-traffic during the construction which is expected to be completed in November.
