K-9 Rico was sworn into office with the Prairie du Chien Police Department in 2017. He and his partner, Lt. Casey Cox, will both be at the street party benefit Sept. 5 at Jim’s Bar, promoting the need for the department’s next K-9 unit. (Photo by Lindsey Ludvik Photography)

A street party benefit to start raising funds for a second K-9 to join the Prairie du Chien police force in 2021 is happening at Jim’s Bar on Thursday, Sept. 5, from 4 to 11 p.m. The Prairie du Chien area community is urged to come out in support.

By 2021, K-9 Rico will be approaching age 6, and it will be time to bring a new dog on board who can be trained to fill Rico’s shoes upon retirement, according to Rico’s partner, Lt. Casey Cox.

Food will be served from 4:30 to 8 p.m. For the cost of a wristband, people can enjoy an all-you-can-eat burgers, brats and boneless ribs meal, with meat donated by Mississippi Meats.  There will also be steakhouse beans, potato salad, chips and a drink served with every meal.

Twisted Vision will DJ and there will be a dunk tank—possibly putting a police officer (or chief) front and center—set up in addition to other family-friendly activities. Raffle prizes include a four-burner gas grill donated by Walmart, an autographed 2018 Packers collectible football, two Badger tickets to the Michigan game at Camp Randall, Miranda Lambert concert tickets, two rod and reel combo fishing poles, a Vortex Riflescope, a River Town Ironworks-made fire ring and more.

Supporters can join the fun inside the bar or spend their time right outside on the 100 block of North Wacouta Avenue, which will be blocked off for this street party. Watch the Packers take on the Bears on a large projector screen in the street, starting at 3 p.m. All are welcome.

K-9 calendars for 2020 will be available for sale, and some will be given away as well.
