On Aug. 23, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was notified of a vehicle versus camper traffic collision near the intersection of Highway 18 and Highway 60 in the town of Bridgeport.

Deputies arrived and observed a white 2004 Buick Lesabre with heavy front and rear end damage parked in the grass near a camper on the north side of the road.

The camper was occupied at the time of the collision and also had severe damage. There were two occupants of the Buick, and they were identified as Ian Gillitzer, 37, Dane County, and Derek Barber, 38, Waterloo, Iowa. Neither men claimed injuries. The sole occupant of the camper appeared to be uninjured. After further investigation, it was determined the Buick was traveling east on Highway 18 when it left the roadway near the intersection with Highway 60. The Buick struck a road a sign, then struck the parked camper, spun and came to rest.

The camper was parked in the front yard of a residence at the time of the collision.

Gillitzer was determined to be the driver of the vehicle and displayed numerous indicators of narcotics impairment. Gillitzer later failed field sobriety testing and was determined to be under the influence of methamphetamine.

Gillitzer was taken into custody on charges of operating with a restricted controlled substance (third offense), probation violation, and failure to maintain control of the vehicle. Assisting the sheriff’s department were the Prairie du Chien Police Department and Milo’s Towing.
