Appointment follows board vote to end current CEO’s tenure

The Crossing Rivers Health Board of Directors announced Tuesday the appointment of Garith Steiner as Interim Chief Executive Officer, effective July 26.

Katie Garrity, President of the Crossing Rivers Health Board of Directors said, “Garith is very familiar with this organization and is dedicated to the organization’s success, as well as the success of the communities we serve.”

To fill the CEO position, the board entered into a 12-month management services agreement with Gundersen Health System, exclusively for the CEO position.

Crossing Rivers Health and Gundersen Health System established the agreement to appoint Steiner, a Prairie du Chien native, who currently serves as administrative vice president of Gundersen Critical Access Hospitals. Steiner will step away from his current role Sept. 6, to be interim CEO at Crossing Rivers Health for the next year.

“The future focus will be on remaining a strong, community-centered organization,” Garrity added. “It is not the intention of the Board of Directors to enter into any form of affiliation with Gundersen, or any other organization. This is simply an agreement in the interim, until a new CEO is hired. The interest of the board is to remain an independent community organization.”

Steiner shared, “I’m looking forward to serving my hometown in a new capacity. Gundersen Health System has had a good working relationship with Crossing Rivers Health for many years, along with Gundersen’s own care for folks in and around Prairie du Chien. We are here to support Crossing Rivers’ patients, clinicians, staff and the community during this transition.”

This appointment follows the announcement by the Board of Directors that they voted to end the tenure of Bill Sexton, who served as the organization’s Chief Executive Officer since 2009.

“We certainly wish Bill well and are appreciative of his dedication over the past 10 years,” said Garrity. “The board has great confidence in the skills and abilities of the staff and leadership at Crossing Rivers Health and looks forward to the bright future ahead for our community hospital and clinics.”
