Prairie du Chien got the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the fourth to put pressure on Fennimore in the first game Monday, before falling 3-2 in the double elimination regional at St. Feriole Island. Everything turned out well, however, as PdC won the nightcap 8-3 to advance to the Class A State American Legion Tournament in Westby July 26-30. A short time later, Coleman popped up safe at second for a stolen base Monday afternoon against Fennimore in regional action.

Gavin Gillitzer fanned nine Fennimore batsmen in the opening game Monday.

The host Prairie du Chien Grasshoppers American Legion baseball team defeated Fennimore in the championship game 8-3 Monday night in a Class A Regional to advance to the state tournament to be held in Westby on July 26-30.

Prairie du Chien was 3-0 prior to Monday’s games in the double elimination tournament held at St. Feriole Island Ballpark. Fennimore was 2-1, having lost to Prairie on Saturday. The Hoppers had to win one game to win the regional title and advance to state. Fennimore had to beat Prairie du Chien twice.

Fennimore won the first game 3-2 to force the second game.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Fennimore pitchers struck out 12, while Prairie du Chien hurlers sat down nine.

Prairie du Chien loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Fennimore pitcher then struck out the side.

Fennimore hit a double and  then a two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning to grab a 2-0 advantage.

The Hoppers scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to pull to within 2-1.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Prairie du Chien tied things up at two when Hunter Davis singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.

In the top of the seventh, Wanek hit a home run to give Fennimore a 3-2 lead.

Fitzgerald was the winning pitcher for Fennimore. He surrendered two runs on three hits over six innings, striking out 10. Wanek threw one inning in relief.

Gavin Gillitzer took the loss for the Hoppers. He surrendered three runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out nine and walking one.

Fennimore tallied two home runs on the day. Wanek had a long ball in the seventh inning. Ahnen went deep in the fifth inning.

Cory Check, Davis, Drake Coleman, Dylan Coleman, and Grant Martin each managed one hit to lead Prairie du Chien.

Wanek led Fennimore with three hits in four at bats.

The Hoppers got things moving in the first inning, when Cory Check doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.

Prairie du Chien pulled away for good with two runs in the fourth inning. Check doubled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run and Grant Martin singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.

Clayton DuCharme toed the rubber for Prairie du Chien. He allowed five hits and three runs over three and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking one.

Wanek led things off on the hill for Fennimore. He lasted two innings, allowing five hits and three runs while walking none. Neuroth threw four innings out of the bullpen.

Prairie du Chien had 11 hits in the game. Check led Prairie du Chien with three hits in four at bats. He had two doubles and two RBIs. Coleman was 2x4 with a triple. Martin was 2x4. Clayton DuCharme hit a triple. Ryan McGrath had 2 RBIs.

Neuroth went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Fennimore in hits.

Prairie du Chien is the number one ranked team in the state in Class A with a 27-6 overall record. The Hoppers will take on Waupaca at 4:30 p.m. on July 26 in Westby in the state tournament.
