Florence Bruns
May 1, 1919-July 1, 2019

Florence Pauline Amelia Bruns, 100, of Monona, Iowa, died Monday, July 1, 2019, at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon, Iowa. Florence was born May 1, 1919 to Emil and Amelia (Schultz) Aulerich on the family farm two miles west of Monona. She was baptized May 18, 1919, by Rev. Albert Daugs and also confirmed by him August 27, 1933, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona. Florence graduated from Luana High School in 1936, and attended Iowa State Teachers College.

Florence was united in marriage with Otmar H. Bruns on November 25, 1937, at St. Paul Lutheran Church by Rev. H.W. Siefkes. Two sons were born to this union: Gary Otmar and Brent Louis. The couple farmed southwest of Monona, along with having an insurance business. They moved to Monona in August 1964.

A very active member of her church, she sang in choir, served as church historian, taught Sunday School, Bible School, the Bethel Bible Series, and enjoyed women’s circle activities. She held many local offices as well as serving as president of both the NE Conference Women’s Missionary Federation, and the Decorah Conference American Lutheran Church Women. A passionate volunteer with the American Bible Society, Florence donated over 1,000 Bibles. Florence was also a charter member of Faith Lutheran NALC.

In her community, Florence served as a 4H leader, was secretary of the NE Iowa Mental Health Board, and was a charter member of the Clayton County Genealogical Society and Monona Historical Society. Florence’s passion was tracing her family’s history, and she compiled numerous volumes of genealogy records.

Florence is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Vivian Bruns of Monona, IA; five grandchildren, Kevin (Kari) Bruns of Cedar Rapids, IA, Heidi (Mike) Hooten of Rochester, MN, Stephanie Diers of Keller, TX, Stacey (Carl) Miller of Houston, TX, and David (Sara) Bruns of Flower Mound, TX; fourteen great grandchildren, Jacob and Julia Bruns,  Kyle and Chloe Hooten, Annaliesa and Jack Diers, Samuel, Noel , Caleb, Timothy, Ella, and Michelle Miller, and Erin and  Keira Bruns, and daughter-in-law, Martha (Butch) Hertel of Haskell, TX.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Otmar Bruns on June 14, 1991; son, Gary Bruns on February 6, 2003; her parents in 1973; and a sister, Dorleen (Don) Witt on May 6, 2014.

Visitation was held from 3-6 pm on Sunday, July 7, 2019, at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona, Iowa. There was also a one-hour visitation before services at the church on Monday. The funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 8, 2019, at Faith Lutheran Church, Monona, Iowa with Rev. Mel Harris as the officiant. Burial followed at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Monona, Iowa.
