Rock bands coming to PdC to be part of something bigger than themselves

The 2019 Music Fights Back Festival will take place this Friday and Saturday, June 21 and 22. This year’s lineup will be headlined by such bands as: Hinder, Smile Empty Soul, Powerman 5000 and SAUL. There will also be other rock bands from around the country. Below is a preview of some of this year’s featured bands.

Hinder

Hinder is a rock band from Oklahoma City. They were formed in 2001 by Joe “Blower” Garvey, Cole Parker, Cody Hanson and Austin Winkler.

Their debut studio album, “Extreme Behavior,” was released in 2005 to commercial success. Their second single from the album, “Lips of an Angel,” reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in October of 2006 and is one of the most famous rock songs of the 2000s.

In 2013, lead singer Austin Winkler, left the band for a solo career. He was replaced by Marshal Dutton in 2015.

In January, they released their new single, “Halo,” which is the lead single from  their upcoming 7th studio album which they are in process of completing.

Currently the band is touring throughout America and Canada. In July, they will head out west for a tour with Royal Bliss.

Drummer Cody Hanson is excited to be performing at Music Fights Back, saying, “The Music Fights Back organization is absolutely awesome. Music has a way of helping us through tough times, so it’s super cool that we can be a part of something like this.”

Hanson said they plan on rocking out hard in Prairie du Chien. “We always come out ready to have fun and party hard,” he added.

Hinder will perform Saturday night at 10:30 p.m.

Smile Empty Soul

Smile Empty Soul is a post-grunge band out of Santa Clarita, Calif. Formed in 1998 by Sean Danielsen, Ryan Martin and Derek Gledhill, they are best known for their 2003 hit song, “Bottom of a Bottle,” which reached the top 10 of the Alternative and Mainstream rock charts.

Currently, Danielson is the only official member of Smile Empty Soul, but he has recruited the help of highly skilled musicians to help tour with him.

The band released their seventh studio album, “Oblivion,” last year, and in February they released an EP featuring acoustic tracks of new and old songs.

Lead singer Sean Danielsen describes Smile Empty Soul as a straight forward rock band who is ready to come hard and loud.

Danielsen is proud to be part of Music Fights Back, adding, “Anytime you can help out someone in need, it’s an incredible feeling.”

Smile Empty Soul is on tour for the whole month of June. They will perform on Friday night at 10:30.

Powerman 5000

Powerman 5000 is an Industrial Metal band from Boston, MA. They were founded in 1991 by Spider One, Adam 12, Dorian 27, Lamar Lawder, Al 3 and DJ Brian Collymore. The band’s only consistent member has been lead singer Spider One, who is also the younger brother of Heavy Metal singer Rob Zombie. 

Their 1999 album, “Tonight the Stars Revolt!” sold over 1,000,000 copies and was certified platinum. The album’s lead single, “When Worlds Collide,” became a big hit on alternative and hard rock radio and made appearances in the video games’ Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, WWE Smackdown! vs. Raw, and in the 2000 Adam Sandler film, Little Nicky.

Most recently, the band released their 9th studio album, “New Wave,” in 2017. The album featured another rock hit, “Sid Vicious in a Dress.”

Currently the band is out on tour for the 20th anniversary of the, “Tonight the Stars Revolt!”tour which will make stops in Kansas City, St. Louis, Dallas, New Orleans, Houston and San Antonio.

Powerman 5000 will perform Satuday night at 9 p.m.

SAUL

SAUL is a Hard Rock and Progressive Metal Band from Sioux City, Iowa. They were formed by brothers Blake (lead vocals) and  Zach Bedsaul (lead guitar/backing vocals), who grew up playing music together. Rounding out the rest of the band is William McIlravy (bass guitar/backup vocals) and Joe Nichols (drums).

SAUL started playing locally in Sioux City and quickly grew a large following. In early 2019, the band released an EP, entitled AEONS. The lead single from the EP, “Brother,” blew up nationwide, becoming the #1 most spun song on SiriusXM’s Octane channel in March. “Brother” currently sits at #32 on Billboard’s Mainstream rock chart.

SAUL leaves for their 2019 tour this week, June 18. They will make stops in Louisville, Memphis, Pittsburgh, and even for a few stops in Canada.

Lead singer Blake Bedsaul said the Music Fights Back Festival is very inspiring to him. “I currently had some family members who have been diagnosed with cancer, so being able to take the stage to help out all the kids who are going through such pain is tremendous and I’m glad we can be a part of it,” he said.

Fans can expect a loud dosage of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal when SAUL performs, with Bedsaul adding, “Prairie du Chien better be ready, because we’re going to throw down hard and bring the heat.” 

SAUL will perform Saturday night at 8 p.m.

3 Years Hollow

3 Years Hollow is a rock band from the Quad Cities. They were formed in 2003 by Jose Urguiza (lead vocals) and Dex Digga (bass) after the two graduated high school. They have since added Tony Reeves (guitar), Neil Kuhlman (guitar, backing vocals) and Chris Cushman (drums) to the band.

They toured locally and caught their big break in 2012 when they were discovered and signed to Imagen Records by Morgan Rose, the drummer from the heavy metal band Sevendust.

In 2014, they released their debut album, “The Cracks.” Two singles from the album charted on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Chart. Since the album’s release, they have shared the stage with bands such as Godsmack, Buckcherry, Pop Evil, Skillet and Seether. 

Currently, the band is in the process of finishing up their follow up album, which is expected to be released in the fall of 2019, with a lead single to be released during the summer, according to lead singer Jose Urguiza. 

For 3 Years Hollow, Music Fights Back will be one of the first stops on their summer 2019 tour. 

Urguiza is more than happy to be a part of the festival in Prairie du Chien, saying, “My father just recently got news that his cancer is gone, so to be playing at such a cool benefit is very great.”

3 Years Hollow will perform on Friday at 9:40 p.m.

Coyote Kid 

(Marah in the Mainsail)

Coyote Kid (formerly known as Marah in the Mainsail), is a folk rock band from Minneapolis. They were formed in 2010 by Austin Durry (vocals/guitar), Cassandra Valentine (vocals/keyboard), Austin Wilder (vocals/bass), John Baumgartner (trombone) and Kian Dziak (drums).

They started playing local battle of the bands and their following took off from there. Since forming, they have toured throughout the U.S. and in parts of Canada. 

Currently, the band is in the process of changing their name to Coyote Kid. The new name comes from a character in their new album. 

Coyote Kid is currently finishing up their newest album which they’re help funding through a Kickstarter campaign. 

They will release a new single, “Femme Fatale,” this Friday, the night they will perform at Music Fights Back.

The band is coming back to Music Fights Back for the second year in a row. Lead singer Austin Durry said he’s extremely excited to be invited back. “Last year when we showed up, we had no idea what the concert was all about. We had an absolute blast being here last year and we’re glad to be back.”

Durry said the band is going to, “Give it all they’ve got when they perform.” He also said they will perform some new music during their set.

Coyote Kid will perform Friday night at 7 p.m.

Cold Kingdom

Cold Kingdom is a Hard Rock band from Minneapolis. They were formed in 2014 by guitarist Evan Ogaard. 

They quickly became a local success and eventually did a west coast tour with Shinedown. 

They released their debut album, “The Moon and the Fool,” with the track “Let It Burn” racking up over 3 million streams on Spotify.

In 2017, the released an eponymous EP which was produced by Shinedown bassist Eric Bass.

In 2018, lead singer Dani Engum left the band. She was replaced by current lead singer, Elissa Pearson. The band also added Pearson’s husband, Collin Pearson on keyboards.

A few weeks ago, the band released their second album, “Into the Black Sky.” They are currently touring the Midwest in support of the album. 

In July, they will perform at Rock Fest on the same night as Evanescence, Skillet and Mastodon.

Lead singer Elissa Pearson said the band prides themselves on their live shows. “We plan on bringing one of the most energetic shows of any other band. You can almost never get a picture of the band without someone showing up blurry.”

Pearson also feels moved that she can take part in Music Fights Back, saying, “It really bought a tear to my eye reading about the festival. The band feels very lucky to take part in such a great cause.”

Cold Kingdom will perform Friday at 8 p.m.
