Kids who participate in the free activities through Kids in the Garden will get their hands dirty planting flowers and vegetables and learning about bugs and other creatures. They will also get to taste some of the goodies from the garden. (Submitted photo)

Kids love to get their hands dirty and learn about plants that grow as well as bugs, birds and other creatures found in nature. A free summer program in Prairie du Chien called Kids in the Garden provides fun educational opportunities in the garden every second and fourth Wednesday, June 12-Aug. 7.

Kids ages 5-14 (and their parents/guardians for those under age 10) are invited to the St. Feriole Island Memorial Gardens at 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on these days. (The first class is an exception and will be held at Lucky Park due to high water.) Come to one or both hour-and-a-half classes, learn from a Crawford County Master Gardener and participate in planting, exploring, playing and harvesting activities. Vegetables grown will be tasted and discussed and kids will learn how to use them. For each class, there will be a StoryWalk, a snack and beverage.

This year’s classes will include the following themes:

Wednesday, June 12–Planting Our Garden and Construction of a Bug Condo. Plant seeds and plants and make labels for the spaces. Learn about these seeds and plants. Explore who the bug guests might be in the bug condo. Fill and put up hummingbird feeders that everyone can watch through the summer.

Wednesday, June 26–Butterflies. After exploring what is ready to harvest and taste, planting beans and cucumbers, monarch butterflies will be the main topic. Look for butterfly eggs and caterpillars. Everyone will go home with a butterfly rearing kit and instructions to successfully raise their own monarchs.

Wednesday, July 10–Frogs, Toads and Turtles. After harvesting and tasting, learn about these reptiles and amphibians and the role they play in the environment.

Wednesday, July 24–Composting. After first tasting vegetables, kids will start a compost pile. Learn what people can compost and what they cannot. Start to lay out some miniature gardens too.

Wednesday, Aug. 7–Miniature Gardens. Gardening on a mini scale. Taste the vegetables that have grown. Create a dinosaur garden complete with some plants that have survived since the time of dinosaurs and/or a bright fairy princess garden.

Interested families are encouraged to check the local radio station for last-minute updates regarding change of location if high water continues to be a factor.
