Clayton Ridge School board okays capital project improvements

At its monthly meeting on May 8, the Clayton Ridge School board of directors approved expenditures for capital projects, heard administrative reports, and  approved contracts.

Board president John Heying led members Mike Finnegan, Christine Aulwes, Alicia Helle, Ellen Johnson, Kathy Ihde and Jason Reimer through the agenda. 

Capital projects

The board approved replacing the telephone system at the Guttenberg attendance center, accepting the bid from Alpine Communications for $17,621.20. 

A bid from McAllister Electric Services for $18,000 was accepted to replace lights in the industrial tech and welding shops.

Ceiling tile will be replaced in six classrooms and restrooms, two bottle-filling stations and drinking fountains will be installed, and the restroom exhaust will be upgraded.

A sink and sliding window will be installed in the concession stand.

The convection oven and proofer will be replaced in the kitchen at a cost of $8,717.

Windows will be installed in the collaboration room.

Desks and chairs will be purchased for two classrooms.

The board accepted a bid of $1320 per month from Marco for a print management plant. 

Administration reports

Superintendent Shane Wahls reported on the completion of the gym roof, school board goal setting, and special meetings for bargaining and capital projects discussion.

Principal Andy Peterson reported on the hiring of Grace Meier as social media coordinator. He noted that commencement will be held May 26 at 2 p.m. The girls golf team is the conference champions and Courtney Olson was the individual champion.

Steve Hoff, Iowa Virtual Academy head of schools, reported on enrollment, retention, screenings, and assessments. He said that graduation is set for June 1.

Board members discussed school bus safety concerns.

Other business

The board approved master contracts, employee handbooks and employee contracts for certified staff, support staff and extra-curricular staff.

An open enrollment request was approved for Emilie Christianson to enroll in Clayton Ridge from Ed-Co. 

The board okayed the use of the middle school building for the Garnavillo Memorial Day observance and to provide transportation to the Clay-Gar Legion from Garnavillo to Clayton.

O'Connor, Brooks & Co. will conduct the annual school audit at a cost of $15,100.

Kathy Connelly was hired to assist with summer technology work.

The board approved a sharing agreement with MFL Mar-Mac School for a librarian for one day per week.

Fund transfers were okayed for the 2018 building project and activity funds. 

The diploma list for the Class of 2019 was approved.
