Mary Esther Severson, 99, of Prairie du Chien, died Monday, May 6, 2019, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien.

 Mary was born Oct. 28, 1919, to James Jr. and Mary Louise (Speck) Fisher on a farm near Eastman. 

She graduated from Prairie du Chien High School in 1937. Mary was the Crawford County Dairy Queen. Mary was united in marriage with Vernon Severson on Oct. 1, 1938. Together, they farmed near Eastman, raising purebred Chester White pigs. In addition to helping her husband on the family farm, Mary worked at McGregor Loudspeaker, Ben Franklin department Store and as a guide at the Villa Louis. They retired to Prairie du Chien after farming. Mary was a member of the Crawford County Extension Homemakers and enjoyed sewing and was a seamstress for many people. In her spare time, Mary enjoyed playing cards, dancing, spending time with friends, and watching her grandkids’ sporting events and musical concerts.

Mary is survived by her two children, Mary Lou (Leonard) Zabel of Prairie du Chien, and Larry (Sharee) Severson of Eastman; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Rosella Smrcina, of Prairie du Chien.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Severson, on Sept. 4, 2000; daughter, Connie Catrona; her parents, James and Mary Louise Fisher; and one sister in infancy.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 9, at Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, with Rev. Lynn Schreck as the officiant. There will be a two-hour visitation before services at the funeral home on Thursday. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Prairie du Chien. 

Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, of Prairie du Chien, is helping the family with arrangements.
