The journey from successful business operatives to prosperous business owners has consisted of long hours, creative thinking, determination and financial acuity.

President Mike Landwehr and his wife, Vice-President Brenda Moser Landwehr, of Guttenberg own Fusion Products, a division of SignX Corporation, located in the Guttenberg Industrial Park at 111 North Hill Drive.

The couple planted the seeds that later became Fusion Products  in 2000, while working together in Milwaukee, Wis., for a company similar to their start-up,  but on a much larger scale.

Mike Landwehr told The Press, "We purchased SignX in 2012. Our desire was to build a company together that could move to any location and still remain successful."

He continued, "We chose Guttenberg to be closer to Brenda's extended family, in addition to living in an area with natural beauty and availability to outdoor recreation."

The Landwehrs completed their mission in 2016 by moving  SignX Corporation to the area.

The successful couple tries to keep their lives in balance by working hard and playing hard.

"We enjoy the Mississippi River valley by pontoon boat and the rolling hills and open highways on our motorcycle," they commented.

In 2017, the business partners made the move to merge their company with Cincinnati, Ohio, business entrepreneur Joe Tartaron, creator of Portico Merchandising, whose company had a similar market focus.

The companies merged and created what is now Fusion Products, a division of SignX Corporation. The company manufactures proprietary and custom displays for retailers and brand marketers. They specialize in back-lit displays, sign holders, fixtures and custom point-of-purchase displays.

Fusion Products is responsible for the sleek framing and streamline displays that retailers depend upon to catch the consumer's attention. The corporation does business with several recognizable names; the short list includes Hard Rock Cafe, Airstream, Chick-Fil-A, Publix Supermarkets, Kwik Star, Casey's, HyVee, Coca-Cola, Lexus and Tesla.

The manufacturing company currently employs 12 people in  a 25,000-square-foot space with an additional 4,000 feet in an adjacent building. Additional land has been procured for expansion of the business should the need arise.

The Landwehrs are committed to keeping their business local.

"We try to sub-contract with regional manufacturing companies. We utilize Guttenberg Industries for our injection molding needs, Autotek Graphics for specialty printing and two manufacturing sites in Waukon, G&S Machining for metal fabrication and Kol-Gol Inc. for wire forming," they said.

Past owners of Bootleggers in Millville and current owners of the Courthouse Inn, the couple recognizes the importance of good employees.

"We like to treat our employees like family. We have a great staff. They are hard-working and dedicated to their jobs. We include them in staff meetings so they can give us input on upcoming projects. We enjoy having cookouts and bringing in pizzas and other incentives to let them know we appreciate all they do."

They continued, "We are sympathetic to employees' needs outside the facility and try to accommodate as much as possible with a flexible schedule."

Advertisers are specialists at using language to "frame" their message. Fusion Products uses physical frames and displays to artistically draw attention to their message.

Pay attention the next time you enter a convenience store, shopping mall, grocery store, or pump gas. Take note of the eye-catching sleek, colorful framework around the advertising message or housing the advertiser's product, and give credit to Guttenberg's own Fusion Products - Connecting customers to products since 2012.
